Andy Hughes has lauded Izzy Brown, but seemingly backed Leeds United boss Marcelo Bielsa’s decision to rarely use him.

Leeds Uniteds Izzy Brown warms up during the Sky Bet Championship match between Middlesbrough and Leeds United at Riverside Stadium on February 9, 2019 in Middlesbrough, England.

Andy Hughes has told Talking Shutt that Izzy Brown has an unbelievable amount of talent, but hinted that he could understand why Marcelo Bielsa has rarely used him during his loan spell at Leeds.

Brown has had an interesting time at Elland Road. It appeared that the Championship club were taking a gamble bringing him in on loan from Chelsea last summer as he continued his comeback from a long-term injury.

He returned to under-23 action around the time that Leeds went through their poorest run of the campaign, and many felt that he may well end up being the ace up Bielsa’s sleeve during the promotion run-in, especially with Samuel Saiz leaving in January.

And while Brown may still have a role to play, some fans are starting to have their doubts regarding Bielsa’s faith in the attacking midfielder. He has been available for a while now, but has only managed to make one senior appearance, coming on after 81 minutes against Queens Park Rangers last month.

Hughes knows how much of an impact Brown can make. The Whites cult-hero is first-team coach at Huddersfield and was at the club when Brown scored four goals – including one against Leeds – during a half-season loan spell to help the Terriers get promoted.

But, while the 41-year-old lauded the youngster’s ability, he attempted to explain why he thinks Bielsa has barely used him since his return to fitness.

“Izzy Brown at Huddersfield was one of the best players who helped get promotion,” he told Talking Shutt.

“Now, Izzy’s a proper player. Unbelievably talented. He’s a man, he’s strong. But he’s not played that much. He’s been injured, but he’s not played that much because Roofe’s absolutely flying.

Leeds United manager Marcelo Bielsa reacts during the Sky Bet Championship match between Leeds United and Sheffield United at Elland Road on March 16, 2019 in Leeds, England.

“Roofe’s a top, top player and you’ve got other players that are performing so you’ve got to look at it in other ways: what’s best for the club, what’s best for the individual. And at the minute, the manager at that club is doing what’s best for that football club.”

Some Leeds supporters may have their doubts about whether Brown will feature again before the end of the campaign. Tyler Roberts has been impressive in the number 10 role, and Bielsa has other options that he clearly trusts.

But if Brown remains in the matchday squads, there is still a chance that he could make an impact. After all, at this stage of the season, he may only need to score one goal at the right time to immediately turn himself into a Leeds hero.
