Rangers midfielder Andy Halliday has told the club’s official website that they have drilled it into Martyn Waghorn that he needs to remain calm and composed within himself.

The striker has missed the majority of the start of the season after picking up a hamstring injury in the first game against Hamilton Academical.

He has since battled back from that knock and returned to the side that took on Queen of the South in the Betfred Cup on Tuesday evening.

It proved to be a happy return to the first-team for him too as he bagged a superb hat-trick to in his side’s eventual 5-0 win.

It was the sort of goal-scoring the Gers have sorely missed in recent weeks and Halliday has shared the message they have given him about his striking responsibility.

“It’s good to see him back out there first and foremost and he’s got to realise the goals will come,” he told the club’s official website.

“Obviously being Waggy, he gets down on himself if he misses a couple of chances so we’ve just drilled it into him that he needs to be composed and calm within himself because we all know Waggy’s quality and he’s going to get goals.”

Rangers will now be keen to see Waghorn show this kind of scoring form when they return to league action.

They are currently fifth in the table with nine points from their first six games this season.

That leaves them four points behind leaders Celtic, who could increase that gap to seven by winning their game in hand.

Rangers have to start picking up wins to ensure it does not grow beyond that and getting Waghorn back among the goals will be key to that ambition.
