Glasgow Rangers midfielder Andy Halliday left Ibrox for Gabala on loan in the summer.

The 26-year-old was frozen out during Pedro Caixinha’s tenure with the Gers and it was little surprise when he departed Ibrox during the summer transfer window. His destination however, caught many by surprise.

Halliday joined Gabala but only made a handful of appearances for the club before the deal came to a premature end earlier this month. And after linking up with the Light Blues squad during their mid-season trip to America, he insisted that he has been itching to get back to familiar surroundings.

“I tried to leave after a week and go somewhere else but they wouldn’t let that happen so it was just a case of trying to stay positive and just hope it was an opportunity for me to come back.”
Current Rangers boss Graeme Murty will be hoping that the fact that Caixinha has now gone and Halliday has had such a negative experience out on loan, the midfielder has all the motivation he needs to make the most of his second chance.
The former Bradford City man may be unlikely to establish himself as one of the first names on Murty’s teamsheet during the coming months, but he can certainly contribute to their fortunes, especially given the problems that they have had in the centre of midfield with injury and suspension this season.
Rangers return to action is just under three weeks when they travel to Fraserburgh in the Scottish Cup, while their first Scottish Premiership game following the winter break comes against Aberdeen a few days later.
