Pundit Andy Gray has told the Daily Record that he’s spoken to Steven Gerrard, and the Rangers boss is set to blood young players he’s a big fan of.

The Gers have started pre-season well, and that was underlined on Sunday afternoon with a 4-0 hammering of Marseille – a well-established Ligue 1 side.

Rangers also beat St Joseph’s 4-0 in their Europa League qualifying tie last week, meaning they’re in fine form ahead of the new Scottish Premiership season.

Level of competition and pre-season efforts must be taken into consideration, and it may too early to suggest that Rangers are about to leapfrog Celtic and win the title.

However, fans have renewed hopes of at least challenging Celtic, and it seems that Gerrard himself is looking to give Celtic something to think about after years of domination in Scotland.

Pundit Gray – a former Rangers striker – has revealed that he’s spoken to Gerrard, and the Gers boss thinks his Rangers side ‘have a title in them’, and it may well be this coming season.

Intriguingly though, Gerrard allegedly told Gray that he’s ready to blood some young players in the coming weeks, which should really excite Rangers fans.

“No, it’s not too early to judge,” said Gray. “Rangers are 100 per cent ready to make a proper title challenge this season. Steven knows it too having talked to him about it after the game. He’s absolutely convinced there’s a title in them and that it can be this year.”

“He also said there are a couple of really young kids he’s going to blood over the next few weeks. He says he likes them a lot and wants them involved with the first team which is great news,” he added.

Lewis Mayo has featured this summer, but these comments may hint that the likes of Dapo Mebude, Kai Kennedy, Josh McPake and Rhys Breen could be in line for playing time, giving Rangers a glimpse of the future.
