Andy Gray offers Carabao Cup advice to Everton and Wolverhampton Wanderers

Everton and Wolves are in the third round of the Carabao Cup.

Pundit Andy Gray has told BeIN Sports that he wants to see his former clubs Everton and Wolverhampton Wanderers really push to win the Carabao Cup this season.

The third round of the Carabao Cup kicks off tonight, with a host of teams from the Premier League down to Macclesfield Town of League Two set to be in action, though Everton’s game against Southampton has been moved to next week.

Many managers will be rotating their sides, as the competition is often a third-choice trophy for many behind the league and the FA Cup, and even fourth-choice for those playing in Europe.

Since Swansea won the competition in 2013, the winners have been either Chelsea, Manchester City or Manchester United, as the biggest clubs have the best depth to go and win a competition like the Carabao Cup.

Yet, with such a massive chasm between the Premier League’s top six and the rest of the Premier League, teams should be looking to win silverware by focusing more attention on the Carabao Cup.

Two such clubs are Everton and Wolverhampton Wanderers, as they are unlikely to be dragged into a relegation battle, but just as unlikely to finish in the top six, meaning a top half finish is the target – but it would be so much better with a piece of silverware too.

Now, pundit Andy Gray – who played for both Everton and Wolves – has told BeIN Sports that he thinks more teams should be focusing on the League Cup, and wants to see both Everton and Wolves field strong teams in an attempt to win the trophy.

“More teams that are outside the top six should pay more attention to it,” said Gray. “I don’t get the likes of Newcastle at Forest, almost handing the tie to Forest because they didn’t want to be in it. Teams that are going to be solid in the Premier League should be going for that. I don’t get my old club Everton. I would love them to play a strong side, I hope he does, and go through and all that, and Wolves should be playing strong sides.”

“Sides that I think are confident that they are going to be in this league, why not have a go at the League Cup? Why not? It’s a major trophy, still, although has been devalued over the years and I don’t know what you can do to get it back,” he added.
