Former Rangers striker Andy Gray has been discussing the potential appointment of Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard as manager.

Steven Gerrard of BT Sport looks on during the Emirates FA Cup Final between Arsenal and Chelsea at Wembley Stadium on May 27, 2017 in London, England.

According to the likes of Sky Sports Liverpool youth coach Steven Gerrard is expected to continue talks with Rangers this week, with the club set to make an announcement on Graeme Murty’s future.

Negotiations are to continue between the club and Gerrard’s party in the aftermath of Rangers’ 5-0 defeat to bitter rivals Celtic.

Any potential agreement would see Gerrard take over his first senior position as a first team manager since retiring from the game.

The news has been the talk of football since it came to light last week with all and sundry having their say.

Pundits and fans have been intrigued by the potential appointment given Celtic’s continued dominance and Gerrard’s status as one of the greatest midfield players of his generation.

Many feel it is too soon for the Reds legend and too big a job to take on. Others feel he is on a hiding to nothing and claim the Rangers job is a thankless task.

But many feel Ibrox could be the perfect place for Gerrard to cut his managerial teeth and drag the club out of Celtic’s shadow in the process.

And former Gers striker Andy Gray told beIN Sports it could be an inspired appointment, even backing Gerrard to match the achievements of legendary former boss Graeme Souness.

“For me I think the kid that’s in there has done a decent job but if someone like Steven was going in there, particularly with a Gary McAllister as has been touted at the moment – and Gary knows an awful lot about Scottish football and what’s required up there – that would be an enormous help to Steven,” Gray told beIN Sports.

“Maybe Steven could do something along the lines of what Graeme Souness did when he suddenly arrived at Ibrox when it was rock bottom and lifted this club from the ground.”

It is a bold comparison from Gray but it will only serve to whet the appetite for an appointment which could reignite Scottish football as a competitive force in the coming years.

Gerrard – already being nicknamed Stevie Ger – would surely have his pick of Liverpool’s promising young players and would undoubtedly be able to attract top names, with the likes of out of contract Fernando Torres just one of the early names linked with reuniting with him in Scotland.
