Andy Goram praises Rangers’ deal for Allan McGregor

Glasgow Rangers brought Allan McGregor back to Ibrox in their first deal of the summer, and the signing has received Andy Goram’s backing.

In comments reported by the Daily Record, Andy Goram has praised Rangers’ decision to sign Allan McGregor this summer and insisted that he is the best goalkeeper available to Steven Gerrard ahead of the Englishman’s first season in charge at Ibrox.

McGregor became the Gers’ first signing of the window, returning to the Scottish Premiership giants six years after his first spell with the Gers came to an end as they were demoted to the bottom division.

It was perhaps a somewhat surprising deal given that McGregor is now 36 and Wes Foderingham has been one of Rangers’ best players during his time as the club’s number one stopper. But Goram insisted that the Scotland international is a superb signing for the Light Blues and should be considered the club’s first-choice.

“There have been noises that Wes is going away anyway and no matter what you do as a manager, you’ve got to bring players in who are better than what you’ve got,” he said, as reported by the Daily Record.

“And in my opinion, Allan is better than what they’ve got. People go on about age. I played until a good age but age doesn’t matter. It’s down to the quality he has and the level he has been playing at. Allan will turn out to be one of the best signings because he has the experience.”

Foderingham was not without fault and did make some mistakes, but he had certainly been one of the more reliable performers in Rangers’ squad this past season and it would be little surprise if he is not planning to stick around if McGregor is going to be Gerrard’s first-choice.

McGregor may not be the long-term answer for Rangers, but the peak of goalkeepers’ careers tends to come a lot closer to their retirement than it does for outfield players – and McGregor will be determined to prove that some of his best years are still ahead of him.

And having been a part of Rangers’ side that have won league titles in the past, he will certainly be hoping to help the squad put themselves right back in the title mix before he hangs up his gloves.
