Andy Couzens has claimed on Twitter that he would take centre-back Alex Bruce at Leeds United if the club cannot re-sign Kyle Bartley on a permanent basis.

Bartley spent last season on loan at Leeds from Premier League side Swansea City but it remains to be seen if the 26-year-old will return to Elland Road.

It was reported by The Sunday People last weekend that Bartley would cost £7.5 million, with The Teeside Gazzette claiming that ex-Whites boss Garry Monk – who also worked with the 26-year-old in South Wales – wants him at Middlesbrough.

It seems unlikely that the former Arsenal youth will be plying his trade with the Yorkshire club next season, and Couzens believes that Bruce, who previously spent two years with United, would represent a fitting replacement.

The 32-year-old defender is out of contract with Hull City this summer, after spending the second half of last season on loan at Wigan Athletic.

Elland Road

Leeds had one of the Championship’s best centre-back pairings last season with Bartley and Pontus Jansson.

It would be massive for the Whites’ promotion hopes if they could pair Bartley and the Swede together again, but at the moment they should be preparing a plan-b option in the likely event that the Englishman does not sign on again.
