Former Premier League striker Andy Cole not impressed with Arsenal’s repeated Champions League failure.
Former Manchester United striker Andy Cole has told Yahoo Sport that Tottenham will soon be in a position to compete with Arsenal, and potentially succeed where they have failed.
Arsenal have lost their opening two Champions League games, defeated by Dinamo Zagreb and Olympiakos, two sides they would have felt confident of beating when the group stages were drawn. Up next, back-to-back matches against Bayern Munich await.
Cole said: “Chelsea and City have already gone past them because their owners actually want to spend money, to grow their clubs. They’ve done that.
“Tottenham are building London’s biggest ground and will enjoy the same revenues as Arsenal in the long run. They might even spend some of theirs, while Arsenal’s billionaires sit on top of their mountain of cash.”
Cole points at the root of Arsenal’s problem, their failure to buy players. Incredibly the Gunners did not bring in a single outfield player in the summer, leaving their squad light in key positions.
This not only missed a chance to improve from a footballing perspective, but seems to have led to complacency within the squad, from a lack of new competition.
Tottenham’s young squad showed their potential with the win against Manchester City at the weekend, and with all their key stars tied to long term contracts beyond the opening of their new ground, the pieces are in place to kick on.
Arsenal have an opportunity to do so already, but this season’s European adventure looks like it is close to being over already.
