Former Newcastle United and Manchester United striker Andy Cole has claimed on social networking site Twitter that Liverpool star Daniel Sturridge is the best number nine in the current England squad.

Cole made the claim during the 2018 FIFA World Cup qualification UEFA Group F game between England and Malta at the Wembley Stadium in London on Saturday evening.

Liverpool striker Sturridge opened the scoring for the Three Lions when he found the net just before the half-hour mark.

Sturridge is one of the best strikers in the Premier League and is an important figure in the current England team.

The main problem with the former Manchester City and Chelsea striker is that he has struggled for fitness over the past two seasons or so.

The 27-year-old is now fully fit, and that can only be good for both England and Liverpool.

England will take on Slovenia away from home on Tuesday evening.
