The winger quickly vanished from Newcastle United after their relegation was confirmed but he’s been linked with a shock return from Crystal Palace.
Understandably, Newcastle United’s vociferous fanbase are divided by the prospect of Andros Townsend returning to St James’ Park this month. The Chronicle reports that The Magpies are hoping to rescue their one-time winger from his Crystal Palace nightmare with a loan deal until the end of the season where, based on performances, a permanent contract could be up for grabs.
On one hand, Townsend scarpered out of Tyneside immediately after their relegation was confirmed in a desire to progress his own career. Some would, and have, described that as ‘jumping the ship’.
However, on the flipside, the England international was Newcastle’s brightest spark in his short-lived spell at St James’.
If the rest of the squad had performed at the same level, perhaps The Magpies wouldn’t be gearing up to play Rotherham United on Saturday.
However, there was always a feeling that he would be back one day. His comments after sealing his summer switch to Palace were not the empty platitudes of a PR written press release, but words directly from the heart.
“Please believe me when I say that this has been an incredibly difficult decision and one I have not taken lightly,” Townsend said in quotes reported by The Chronicle.
“I signed for Newcastle fully aware of the task at hand and it was my absolute desire to keep the club in the Premier League.
“I hope the fans could see that from day one I gave everything I possibly could during the season and never once gave up on the fight for survival.”
On balance, his quick-fire exit appears more than logical. After all, based on his own displays, he didn’t deserve relegation.
And his clear admiration for this massive club in the North East should convince fans to welcome him back with open arms.
