The Crystal Palace winger wants to hit double figures this term, but is already some way behind the Eagles captain.
Crystal Palace winger Andros Townsend has told reporters, via the London Evening Standard, that he wants to score at least 10 goals this season.
Townsend joined Palace from relegated Newcastle United for £13 million earlier this summer after impressing for the Magpies in the final months of last season.
The winger scored four times in 13 appearances for the Tyneside club last term, and netted his first for the Eagles in the 4-1 win over Stoke City at the weekend.
However, he – and the rest of the Palace squad – are currently being outshone in that department by captain and centre-back Scott Dann, who has already found the net three times in all competitions.
Townsend has revealed that he made a bet with the defender before the start of the season over who would score more, and he is aiming to outstrip his teammate and rack up double figures this term.
The winger said, via the Standard: “Me and Scott had a friendly bet who would score more goals this season. Seeing him go 3-0 up, I knew I had to claw it back before it was too late! I have given him a bit of a head start this season!
“Scott is a fantastic player. He is always up there with the top scoring centre-backs and is doing it again this season. I am sure he will get a few more.
“I want to be in double figures. I have not really set a goal; I think it is too early in the season to set goals. I just want to perform like I did today and be effective. Just one more than Scott would be nice. There is no prize between us – just pride. We are two proud players and I think pride is enough.”
Townsend has been an important part of Alan Pardew’s side at Selhurst Park so far this season, and will be hoping that his first goal can further spur him on as he hunts for an England recall.
