Andros Townsend has told TalkSport Breakfast (23/09/20 at 9:10 am) that he thinks Dele Alli’s agent is the one putting the transfer bait out there to see how Tottenham react to it.

Rumours have emerged that Alli could leave Spurs, with PSG mentioned as potential takers, but Townsend doesn’t think the attack-minded midfielder will leave and has backed him to come good.

The Telegraph reported that Ligue 1 champions PSG are interested in signing Alli this summer.

Whilst Crystal Palace’s Townsend acknowledged that PSG are ‘one of the best clubs in the world’, he feels the talk about Alli potentially heading for the exit door is coming more from his agent.

“If these reports are to be believed then obviously PSG are one of the best clubs in the world,” Townsend told TalkSport. “But I don’t think he will [leave].

“I think it’s probably the agent seeing that he’s got jobs from a few and is just dropping his name out into the media to see how Spurs react to it. I think it’s another test from Mourinho. You saw in the documentary how much he does like Dele.

“Maybe he’s not getting what he wants from him, at the minute, and he feels he has to take drastic measures. He has to drop him for a few games to see how he would react. Like Jose Mourinho has done many times in his career and most recently to Ndombele, who has come back into the side and played really well – I am sure Dele Alli will come out the other side to the Dele Alli that we saw at times last season.”

Tottenham Hotspur’s summer signings

  1. Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg

    £15 million; Southampton

  2. Joe Hart

    Free

  3. Matt Doherty

    £13 million; Wolves

  4. Sergio Reguilon

    £25 million; Real Madrid

  5. Gareth Bale

    Loan; Real Madrid

  6. Carlos Vinicius

    Loan; Benfica

  7. Joe Rodon

    £12 million; Swansea

What hasn’t helped Alli’s cause is that he was left out of Tottenham’s last two matchday squads – a Europa League qualifier and in the Premier League.

Added with Tottenham’s All or Nothing documentary shedding more light on Alli’s relationship with Mourinho, it can result in the coverage of the two being spun into a negative fashion.

Mourinho has called out players before, most recently Tanguy Ndombele, and he’s now back in the squad and reacting well to the criticism.
