Andros Townsend has told The Final Word that Newcastle United fans love a “maverick” and Bruno Guimaraes fits the criteria – before saying he hopes his old club can keep the Brazilian star for many more years in the Premier League.
Guimaraes, 25, is lighting up the Premier League following his move from Lyon in January. Despite only playing 24 times since the £35million move, he is already being discussed as one of the best midfielders in the Premier League.
On Saturday, he scored a brace from the middle of the park – including a lovely low drive for his second. It saw the Toon cruise to a 5-1 win over Brentford on Tyneside, taking Newcastle and Guimaraes up to a lofty sixth position.
Townsend, who spent half a season at Newcastle before pushing through a move to Crystal Palace after relegation, says Guimaraes suits Newcastle perfectly. He hopes Newcastle can keep hold of the midfielder for many years to come.
“If there is ever a player that is suited to Newcastle, they love a maverick. They adored Ben Arfa, Saint-Maximin more recently. This guy, they absolutely adore him. Hopefully they enjoy him for many more years in the Premier League.”

What a signing he has been. Eddie Howe has made a whole host of top signings since arriving at the club. Kieran Trippier has been a brilliant addition, a real leader at just £12million. His signing is likely to have convinced others.
Alexander Isak is a top, top bit of business. A club-record move, but for a player with enormous potential. He has hit the ground running. Sven Botman is an exciting talent at centre-back. Dan Burn, Nick Pope and Matt Targett – solid.
But in terms of value for money, capturing the hearts of Toon fans and exciting the crowd – Guimaraes is the best of the lot. He is a player that could go on to become one of the best in the Premier League, he has that kind of potential.
