Andros Townsend has warned Tottenham Hotspur that there is still a long way to go in the Premier League title race, on the ITV Football podcast.

Tottenham currently lead the way in the top flight, which has led to talk emerging that Jose Mourinho’s side could well be title contenders this term.

But Townsend feels that Manchester City could still have say in the battle to finish on top, even though they are eight points behind Spurs as things stand.

“I think there’s a long way to go. I think if you ask any Spurs fan about title talk they’ll say the same,” the former Spurs winger said.

“There’s a long way to go, a lot of matches, a lot of competitions in a short space of time.

“Tottenham at the moment are top of the table and seem to have done incredible in the transfer window. They’ve added what they have missed in the past.

“Hopefully that’s the missing piece that Spurs needed to go that extra step, but I’m not counting out Manchester City and Liverpool are starting to get in their stride.”

Tottenham have been in wonderful form going forward this term, but their defence has also tightened up in recent weeks.

Spurs have conceded just one goal in their last four league outings, and if they continue to look so strong at the back, then positive results will surely keep coming.

Mourinho’s side’s title credentials will be heavily examined over the coming weeks, as their fixture list looks extremely tough.

Tottenham face games against Chelsea, Arsenal, Leicester City and Liverpool in the near future, and if they can remain on top after all those matches have been played then they will prove themselves as serious contenders to win the Premier League title for the first time in their history.
