Bolton Wanderers are interested in re-signing Sammy Ameobi from Newcastle United this month.
Bolton chairman Ken Anderson has hinted that Sammy Ameobi may return to the Macron before the end of the transfer window, The Chronicle reports, especially if Newcastle United enjoy a successful end to the window.
The sprightly winger enjoyed a successful loan spell with Bolton earlier in the season, helping maintain their League One promotion push and impressing to the extent that manager Phil Parkinson did little to hide his desire to keep him at the club on a permanent basis.
However, after Christian Atsu departed for the African Cup of Nations and Benitez’s desire to bring in a new left winger provide futile, Ameobi returned to St James’ Park this month and came off the bench for the final half hour against Rotherham.
Nonetheless, The Chronicle reports that Andros Townsend is edging closer to a return from Crystal Palace while Atsu is set to return in early February at the latest, giving Bolton’s hope that a deal for Ameobi can still be reached.

“We haven’t given up hope of him coming back if Newcastle do manage to bring in the players they are targeting or their African Cup of Nations players return early. We are watching matters there carefully,” Anderson said in quotes reported by The Chronicle.
“One good thing from our point of view is that Sammy cannot play anywhere else this season now as he has figured for two clubs.”

It’s difficult to dispel the notion that Ameobi was only brought back as a short-term stop-gap or as an alternative if the deal for Townsend fell through.
And, with the England international likely to push the 24-year-old down the pecking order once more, it appears that his Newcastle career could finally be brought to an end before the end of the month.
