PSV Eindhoven want Hull City’s Andrew Robertson as a replacement for Jetro Willems – a man Newcastle United have chased for years.
The sight of a Brit abroad is all too rare in English football. Apart from Gareth Bale, a three-time Champions League winner at Real Madrid, and Sporting Lisbon’s forgotten man Ryan Gould, there is an alarming paucity of homegrown players stepping out of their comfort zone and trying their hand on the continent.
The report claims that PSV Eindhoven are interested in rivalling a number of Premier League clubs, particularly Burnley, Liverpool and Newcastle United, for the signature of the Hull City left-back in one of the year’s most surprising moves.
Hull City s Andrew Robertson is in demand
The Scotland international looks set to leave the KCom Stadium after The Tigers were relegated from the top flight. The Evening Express adds that Robertson, whose wand of a left foot makes him one of the most cultured full-backs in Britain, has only a year remaining on his contract, giving PSV hope that they can lure him to the Eredivisie.
And this would not go down well at Newcastle. The future of manager Rafael Benitez has come into question frequently over the last couple of weeks as tension rises at St James’ Park over the lack of reinforcements.
And with Newcastle crying out for a left-back to rival Paul Dummett, with out-of-favour pair Achraf Lazaar and Massadio Haidara expected to leave, Robertson is the ideal solution.
Like for like
However, losing out to PSV could be viewed as a window of opportunity. After all, the former Dundee United flyer will be viewed as a potential replacement for Dutch international Jetro Willems – a player whose links with Newcastle as far back as 2014, as reported by The Chronicle.
The 23-year-old, who became the youngest ever player to appear at a European Championship when exploding onto the scene with The Netherlands in 2012, told Football Oranje in March that he wanted to move to England this summer after six years with PSV.
Jetro Willems has won two Eredivisie titles with PSV
And missing out on Robertson could make that deal more likely than ever.
