And Villas-Boas may have warned Spurs fans about this summer, ahead of time.
He said to the London Evening Standard earlier this year: “The size of the club, fan base and its infrastructure make you dream you can go higher but the philosophy at the top prevents you.”
Villas-Boas actually was given money to spend at Spurs, although that was after Gareth Bale was sold.
Pochettino, though, just couldn’t get a transfer for any player that he wanted over the line.
Spurs are now under pressure to respond to their critics, by proving that stability can be a positive rather than a negative.
Most of their top four rivals have strengthened heavily this summer, but Spurs will be hoping that the continuity in their squad aids them.
