Glenn Hoddle has suggested that he wouldn’t have sent off Malo Gusto during Chelsea’s 1-0 defeat to Aston Villa on Sunday at Stamford Bridge.

Whilst Mauricio Pochettino’s Chelsea had most of the ball during parts of the game, Unai Emery and his Aston Villa side still created a number of big chances to score themselves.

The game was ever so close heading into the hour mark, before Malo Gusto’s late lung on Lucas Digne resulted in the on-field referee looking at his monitor and then overturning his on-field call.

Former Chelsea man Glenn Hoddle stated that ‘some refs’ would have told the 20-year-old to head for an early shower, whilst others would have kept him on the pitch, as he told Premier League Productions (24/09/23 at 4:20 pm).

Either way, it was another bitter defeat for Mauricio Pochettino and his Chelsea side, with Unai Emery’s Villa moving into sixth in the table.

Malo Gusto’s red card against Aston Villa

“I think this is debatable,” said Hoddle. “He wins the ball there and he has got sent off. He has caught the player, no doubt about that.

“For me, some refs would give it and some wouldn’t because I think he gets a little bit of the ball first, then his follow-through catches him.”

It gets worse for Chelsea…

Another game and another defeat. That’s also three games without a goal for Chelsea, who can’t seem to find the light from anywhere.

The issue the Chelsea faithful will have about the Villa defeat is the number of chances the forward created or made, yet no-one looks like they are anywhere near to scoring.

Added to that, Villa had very little time to prepare for the game because they were in Poland only a few days ago for the Europa Conference League, which does make matters worse from Pochettino’s side.
