Carlo Ancelotti has revealed to the Liverpool Echo that he was not hard on his Everton players last night, despite seeing them let a lead slip against Leicester City.

A brilliant strike from James Rodriguez had given Everton an advantage in their game against the Foxes.

However, an error from Jordan Pickford allowed Youri Tielemens to strike an equaliser in the second-half.

With Leicester flying high in the table, the result could still be seen as a positive one for Everton.

And Ancelotti thinks that as long as the Toffees go and beat Newcastle United at the weekend, then they can look back and feel happy enough with their efforts yesterday.

“I spoke with the players saying that the point is good if we are able to win on Saturday so we are focused on Saturday,” the Italian boss said.

In truth Leicester were worth a point against Everton, as they pressed hard in the second half, but the manner in which the Toffees conceded was a big frustration.

Pickford really should have stopped Tielemans’ shot, but his error ended up costing his side.

There surely must be question marks over whether the England international keeps his place in Everton’s team at the weekend now, with Robin Olsen waiting in the wings.

If Everton are able to win at the weekend they could yet move into the top four, which would represent significant progress for them in the first half of the campaign.
