Everton star James Rodriguez played through the pain barrier against Liverpool last weekend it seems.

The Colombian sensation has been ruled out of the Toffees’ clash with Southampton on Sunday.

Rodriguez was fouled early on by Liverpool centre-back Virgil van Dijk in last week’s 2-2 Merseyside derby at Goodison Park.

And Everton boss Carlo Ancelotti has confirmed that the South American – who played on – came off the worst of it in that tackle by the big Reds star.

He told The Echo: “Unfortunately, James had a problem during the game. He had a mistimed tackle with Virgil van Dijk at the beginning of the game and I think he will not be available for the game against Southampton.”

Shortly after that, Van Dijk wound up suffering a season-ending injury when Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford raced from his line and lunged into the Liverpool powerhouse, who has been omitted from his side’s revised Premier League squad.

Rodriguez will be a big miss against the Saints, though.

The former Real Madrid star has managed three goals and three assists in his first five Premier League games for the Blues.
