Ancelotti hints ‘really fast’ Everton player could make his debut against Liverpool

Toffees boss Carlo Ancelotti has told Everton TV a young Englishman is in contention for a spot in the starting XI for the Merseyside derby on Saturday.

The red half of the city of Liverpool has been dominant in recent years.

However, Carlo Ancelotti’s magic has brought hope to Everton supporters and, considering their start to the season, they have a massive chance to get one over their neighbours this weekend.

Everton have a really strong squad thanks to their summer signings. James Rodriguez, Allan and Abdoulaye Doucoure have all been brilliant so far, but another new signing has yet to get his chance.

The Toffees signed Ben Godfrey on transfer deadline day for £25 million from Norwich City (BBC). The Englishman put in an impressive display for England Under-21s in their 2-1 defeat of Turkey last night (13 October).

Godfrey could make his debut against Liverpool

Ancelotti confirmed as long as Godfrey is fit, having played the full 90 minutes for England Under-21s, he should be raring to go.

He told Everton TV: “Godfrey is a really talented player. He’s really fast, very quick. He has different characteristics from the centre-backs we have in this moment. 

“He’s a complete defender – fast, good with his head and good with the ball. He has all the quality to be a really good centre-back.

“He has experience in the Premier League. He was really happy to come here. I think he will be a good signing, not only for the present, because I think he is ready to play in the Premier League, but also for the future of the club.

“If he is fit, he is going to be in competition with the others [for the game against Liverpool].”

In Everton’s defensive unit, Mason Holgate is still injured while Yerry Mina missed Colombia’s game against Chile due to a thigh problem suffered on international duty.

If the Colombian isn’t fit for the game on Saturday, Godfrey is the logical option next to Michael Keane. The former Norwich City man will be an instant Toffees hero if he can help Everton beat Liverpool.
