CIES have found the five most similar players to Kylian Mbappe in European football, and interestingly, Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah is on the list.
The Egyptian is undoubtedly one of the best footballers in the world, so it’s not surprising to see that he’s putting up similar numbers to Mbappe, but what is rather surprising is to see the players who rank ahead of him in this metric.
RB Leipzig’s Christopher Nkunku, Goncalo Guedes and Memphis Depay are three speedy attackers who love to cut inside onto their stronger foot, so it’s not all that shocking to see them represented here, but according to CIES, the most similar player to Mbappe in Europe is Leicester’s James Maddison.
We find it hard to believe after watching Salah and Maddison this season that the Englishman is more Mbappe-Esque than the Liverpool star, but the stats don’t lie.
Aside from the fact that Maddison ranks higher than Salah in this metric, it is thought-provoking to compare Mbappe and Salah to one another.
The Frenchman is reportedly a target for Liverpool, and based on his similarities to Salah, he would absolutely thrive in this Jurgen Klopp team.
It remains to be seen what happens with Mbappe once his PSG contract is up, but if he can perform to Salah’s level at Liverpool, he would be an absolute superstar for the Reds.
