‘An example for all’: Reported Leeds target hits 31st goal of the season; captain pays tribute

Reported Leeds United target Cristhian Stuani scored his 31st goal of the season on Sunday with Girona teammate Alex Granell paying tribute to a man who ‘is an example for all of us’, speaking to Diari de Girona.

Almeria fans certainly suffered a nasty case of déjà vu as Samu Saiz squared for Stuani to tap home the winner during their 2-1 play-off semi-final second leg defeat over the weekend.

The Girona forwards had combined to score an almost identical goal just three days earlier in the first leg after all.

Leeds are sniffing around a 33-year-old striker in the form of his life.

And Girona must know that their chances of hanging onto a 31-goal talisman would be given one hell of a boost by victory over Elche in the play-off final.

Long-serving skipper Granell would certainly love to see Stuani stick around for a fourth season in Catalonia.

“He is an example for all of us. He encourages us to compete. He is the best reference that the staff could have,” Granell says.

“Not just because of the goals, which he has been showing us for years, but for how he is, his perseverance and commitment.”

90Min reported in July that Leeds were tempted to offer Stuani a second chance in England, five years after Victor Orta paid almost £3 million to bring the Uruguay international to Middlesbrough.

Stuani also scored 21 and 19 goals in his two La Liga seasons at Girona, though this was not enough to save the Blanquivermells from relegation in 2019.
