Everton have been linked with a move for the PSV Eindhoven defender but do they really need him?
According to a report from the print edition of the Mirror (05/06/17 page 54) Everton are among the clubs interested in signing PSV Eindhoven right-back Santiago Arias this summer, but given the players already at Goodison Park (and the alleged interest in free agent Cuco Martina) the Toffees simply do not need him.
With a £12million price tag, Everton would be wise to keep their cash in their pocket and wait to strengthen elsewhere.
After all, while Seamus Coleman is currently side-lined with a broken leg he will return at some point next season, while Mason Holgate proved to be a more than able deputy during the Irishman’s absence.
With Tyias Browning and Jonjo Kenny also on Everton’s books, spending a substantial amount on another full-back option makes little sense, especially if – as reported by the Guardian – the Toffees reunite manager Ronald Koeman with his former Southampton player Martina this summer.
Arias is a decent player who represents good value for money given his age and experience. However Everton simply do not need him.
Other areas of the field certainly do need substantial work as they bid to push for another improved campaign in 2018, especially with the additional demands of European football next season. Yet the Arias rumour is surely one that can be put to bed, at least from an Everton perspective.
The transfer window opens shortly and it is up to Koeman to get it right – something he is already making a habit of doing.
