Paul Gilmour told Sky Sports News (30/06/21 at 8:20 pm) that there will be an ’emphasis on defenders’ from Tottenham’s new boss, Nuno Espirito Santo.

Tottenham confirmed on Wednesday evening that they have decided to appoint Nuno as their new coach after over two months of searching.

Nuno replaces his fellow countryman in the Tottenham dugout and the former Wolves boss has his work cut out to lift this declining squad back into the Champions League.

Harry Kane is the obvious name that will be at the top of Tottenham’s thoughts during the summer transfer window, as a Sky journalist spoke about a possible re-build.

“One of the things at the training ground, the in-tray, will have that name at the very top, Harry Kane, and what happens with him,” said Gilmour.

“If he does leave then there could be a complete re-build of the squad. There’s going to be an emphasis on defenders and there will be an emphasis on a bit of a re-build.

“Any re-build will come at a good time with the managing director and a new coach.”

Tottenham’s left-back spot is perhaps their strongest, with Sergio Reguilon impressing fans during his debut campaign and Ben Davies being another solid addition.

But right-back is a worry, with both Matt Doherty and Serge Aurier struggling last season, although something suggests that one of those might just turn into Cafu next season.

Then there are the players at the heart of the defence and take your pick as to who needs replacing or handed another chance because they were all inconsistent last season.

From Eric Dier, who is perhaps the least popular to keep his place at the back, to Joe Rodon, who showed lots of promising moments and needs that proven head next to him in order to take his game and this defence to the next level.
