Tottenham could make a surprise move to sign Leicester City superstar James Maddison despite intense interest this summer in the England playmaker from Newcastle United.

According to CBS Sports journalist Ben Jacobs via GiveMeSport, the north London side are admirers of the Foxes star are could make a move for Maddison right from under Newcastle’s noses, with the Magpies chasing the 25-year-old for the past month.

As per the report, Leicester are demanding £60m for their talismanic midfielder this summer as Brenden Rodgers’ side have got off to a horrific start in the Premier League season, losing two and drawing one of their opening three games, with Maddison scoring just one of the Foxes’ two goals this campaign.

Talks of a sale with Newcastle have been ongoing all summer, yet according to Jacobs, Tottenham could make a surprise move to sign Maddison, with Antonio Conte eyeing one final signing for the north London side before the closure of the transfer window next Thursday.

Jacobs said: “I think that Maddison sees himself in the next year or two, playing regular European football. That might be Newcastle, so there’s an element of persuasion there of joining the project from the ground up and help us get there.”

The CBS Sports journalist added about Tottenham’s interest in Maddison: “But there’s a sort of vague admiration from Spurs. They’ve not done anything with it, but I think it’s that type of club, if they come in for Maddison in a future window that may make him wait.”

Maddison and Newcastle feel like a match made in heaven, yet with the Toon stalling on a deal and Tottenham now seemingly in the race to sign the English playmaker, Eddie Howe and his team must look to speed up the process to bring the Leicester star to the northeast.

After all, Maddison could be perfect for Newcastle and an ideal signing to take the Toon to the next level, yet with the club taking their time over completing a deal, time is slowly running out for the northeast side to sign Maddison this summer, with Tottenham’s interest a warning for what could come in the future.
