Would Tottenham Hotspur really sell Toby Alderweireld next summer?

According to The Mail, Tottenham Hotspur will consider selling Toby Alderweireld next summer with the Belgian yet to commit to a new contract.

Spurs are refusing to break their wage structure to offer Alderweireld the increase he wants, and player and club are yet to agree terms.

The Mail reports: “Concerns are growing that Tottenham could be forced to sell Alderweireld this summer with talks over a new deal at deadlock.”

While Spurs’ desire to stick to a firm wage structure is admirable, it is not viable if they are to keep hold of their best players.

Paul Merson may often be wrong about Tottenham, but he was close to the mark this week when he told SkySports that Alderweireld is the best defender in the world.

The Belgian’s absence from the side has hit them hard in recent weeks – Tottenham have won none of the four Premier League games they have played without him since he suffered a hamstring injury.

If Tottenham were to sell Alderweireld next summer, it would be an absolutely indefensible decision.

And it would come at the worst possible time for the club, with the team set to move into their new stadium next season.

Next summer is a time when it should be all about positivity, and signing marquee players to build the feelgood factor and help fans build a good atmosphere at the new stadium.

The last thing they should be doing is selling a key player like Alderweireld at such an important time.

Surely chairman Daniel Levy is aware of this, and no amount of replacements will be able to soften the blow of losing Alderweireld, and emulating his partnership with pal Jan Vertonghen.
