Scoring goals or keeping clean sheets can make you a popular figure in Glasgow, but in order to become a club legend it’s vital that you prove yourself in the derby.

Andy Goram did so time and again during his seven years at Ibrox, with a series of crucial saves that helped Rangers towards nine-in-a-row.

His point-blank save from Pierre van Hooijdonk in 1995’s 3-3 draw at Ibrox is regarded as a classic over 25 years on, as is the fingertip onto the post to deny Phil O’Donnell at Celtic Park that secured a vital 0-0 draw in 1996.

Goram’s love of the derby has been emulated by Allan McGregor, who secured a clean sheet on Saturday against Celtic in his 401st appearance for the club.

Rangers were under the cosh during the first period, but McGregor was resolute and pulled off a stunning stop to deny Leigh Griffiths that left the bemused Scotland striker shaking his head.

That display prompted Goram’s former team-mate Mark Hateley to tell Record Sport: “I would comfortably say you can now mention Allan McGregor in the same sentence as Andy Goram.

“I can’t give him a higher accolade than that.”

Modern supporters who may not have witnessed Goram in his heyday were given an opportunity this week when a video showcasing the legendary keeper’s Old Firm exploits went viral.

A video posted by the Goalkeepers’ Union podcast featuring numerous impressive stops in derbies had fans salivating, with debate intensifying as to whether Goram or McGregor can be considered the superior custodian.

After being repeatedly pressed by Andy Walker during Saturday’s match to rank the two keepers, Rangers icon Ally McCoist told Sky Sports viewers: “Right. I’m going to say Goram is 9.9 out of 10. McGregor I’ll give 9.8…point 5.”
