Leeds United allowed Robert Green to join Huddersfield Town back in August.
Much has been made of Leeds United’s signings since Victor Orta arrived as director of football last summer, but one outgoing deal hasn’t worked out well for anybody either.
Signings such as Felix Weidwald, Mateusz Klich and Jay-Roy Grot haven’t had the desired impact, and tied into the arrival of German flop Weidwald was the departure of goalkeeper Robert Green.
The former QPR man was one of Leeds’ standout performers last season, producing a number of impressive displays between the sticks before bizarrely being demoted to second choice behind Weidwald.
Green ended up joining local rivals Huddersfield Town over the summer, and today, Leeds owner Andrea Radrizzani has told LUTV that Green was the one who wanted to leave, and regrets seeing the former England ace leave for no playing time with Huddersfield.
Green hasn’t made a single appearance for Huddersfield this term, and whilst the Terriers do hold a one-year option on his contract, a parting of the ways appears inevitable when his deal ends this summer.
Ultimately, the move hasn’t worked out well for any party. Leeds took the strange decision to try and replace Green despite his superb campaign last season, and his replacement Weidwald has been a complete disaster since his move from Werder Bremen.
Meanwhile, Green – now 38 – has spent one of his final seasons as a player sat on the sidelines rather than playing week in and week out as he did last season – and amid Radrizzani’s comments about the deal, many involved may wish that Green was still Leeds’ first-choice goalkeeper to this day.
