Steven Gerrard must attempt to bring Andre Wisdom to Rangers, after missing out on landing Martin Skrtel.

Steven Gerrard is unveiled as the new manager of Rangers football Club at Ibrox Stadium on May 4, 2018 in Glasgow, Scotland.

Rangers’ efforts to sign Martin Skrtel appear to be over, with SkySports reporting he is simply too expensive for the Gers.

This leaves Rangers needing to find alternatives in defence, and one option could be a former teammate of his and Skrtel’s, Andre Wisdom.

Wisdom is starring for Derby County, after finally leaving Liverpool permanently last summer, but the Rams’ woes could mean he becomes available for Rangers to try and bring him to Ibrox.

The Derby Telegraph report the Rams may have to cash in on several of their players, after failing to win promotion through the play-offs.

The report suggests Wisdom is worth £2.48 million, a sum which would place him within Rangers’ price range.

Wisdom, 25, was a regular for the Rams last season, starting 31 of 46 Championship games, and while they would be reluctant sellers, the defender could be tempted by the chance to work with his former Liverpool teammate.

The defender told The Mail in 2013 that he credited playing and training with Gerrard as integral to his success.

He said: “Steven Gerrard is a great captain for club and country. I am a defender and he is a midfielder, but it doesn’t matter what position you play. You can learn a lot from him, especially being young.

“‘Training with him every day I see the way he presents himself and the way he lifts teams in time of need for club or country.”

Being chosen by Gerrard to lead Rangers’ revolution in defence would be seen by Wisdom as a huge honour.

If Rangers can put together a tempting offer to Derby, they might just stand a chance.
