Speaking on The Overlap, David Ornstein has suggested that Mauricio Pochettino would be open to taking the Aston Villa job.

It must be said that Ornstein wasn’t reporting anything he’d heard from sources linking Pochettino to this job, but as someone who clearly has contacts close to Pochettino, he’s of the opinion that the Argentine would be open to heading to Villa Park.

Indeed, Ornstein says that Villa are as ambitious as any other top club, and due to the Midland’s club’s storied history, Pochettino wouldn’t be likely to discount a move to Villa Park if the opportunity arose.

What’s been said?

Ornstein spoke about Pochettino and the Villa job.

“He built at Espanyol, he built at Southampton, he built at Tottenham,” Ornstein said.

“Wes Edens and Nassef Sawaris at Aston Villa are as ambitious as any of those clubs, they have the history as European Cup winners and I don’t think someone like Mauricio Pochettino – I’m not trying to link him to this job, but I don’t think he would discount a club like Aston Villa,” Ornstein concluded.

Great relaunching pad

Aston Villa probably wouldn’t be a long-term job for Pochettino, but it could be a great relaunching pad as he looks to get back to the top of the game.

After being sacked by both PSG and Tottenham over the past three years, Pochettino needs to raise his stock once again, and taking over a struggling, but talented, Villa squad could do just that.

A move like this would be reminiscent of Carlo Ancelotti heading to Everton, and while that didn’t necessarily benefit the Toffees too much, it gave the Italian the platform to remind everyone what he is capable of as a coach.

As a four-time Premier League Manager of the Month, Pochettino knows how to be a great success at this level, and this Villa squad is capable of a lot more than it’s currently achieving.

Pochettino to Villa is unlikely for a number of reasons, but there is a slight argument to make that this is a logical next step in the Argentine’s career.
