Everton fans have been hoping ever since Farhad Moshiri invested in the club last year that a ‘statement signing’ would be delivered.
There have been plenty of impressive additions so far, but not a headline grabbing signing which would make the rest of Europe sit up and take notice of the fact the Toffees want to mix it with the continent’s elite.
This week their hopes appear to be trending in the opposite direction, with star striker Romelu Lukaku refusing to sign a new contract, the most lucrative Everton have ever offered, The BBC reported.
If the Belgian does leave, then Everton will gain a lot of money to put towards a replacement. Could Kylian Mbappe be that man?

He scored in both legs of their Champions League tie against Manchester City, enhancing his reputation in the process.
Amid his display last night, Everton fans took to Twitter to suggest him as a potential summer signing and Lukaku replacement.
Mbappe arriving would certainly soften the blow of Lukaku leaving, but Everton would face a tough time landing him even with all the money at their disposal.
The Sun reported last month that Juventus, Manchester City and Arsenal are all interested, with Monaco only willing to deal for £50 million plus add ons.
With the striker in his breakthrough season, and used to playing up alongside Radamel Falcao, he would be somewhat of gamble for Everton to entrust to lead their attack, despite his unbelievable raw ability.
The fact fans are discussing him as a potential addition shows the ambition and belief around the club at present, but in this instance they may be dreaming a little too big.
