Jim Beglin told Amazon Prime that he noticed John McGinn being the ‘voice’ out on the pitch for Aston Villa during their 1-1 draw against Chelsea on Monday.

The former Republic of Ireland international pointed out that it’s usually Tyrone Mings, who was suspended for the fixture, who is the one ‘screaming’ and ‘commanding things’ around him.

But in his absence, Villa’s combative and underrated midfielder stepped up to the plate.

Beglin praised McGinn for being that leader on the pitch, as he produced a Man of the Match display at Stamford Bridge.

“Without Tyrone Mings, certainly in the Burnley game, you could hear him [Mings] from where we were positioned in commentary, screaming at everybody around him and commanding things,” said Beglin.

“Well, I think McGinn has picked up on that. He’s been the voice. He is cajoling everybody around him in finding that bit more.

“And you need leaders like that when you are missing someone like Mings.”

It just goes to show how far this Aston Villa side has come that such players are stepping up to the plate and taking their game to the next level.

Dean Smith’s men, who are fifth in the Premier League table, take on Manchester United on Friday night where Mings is scheduled to return.

But given the performances of Kortney Hause recently and how Ezri Konsa performed after coming back from illness, the England international might find himself on the bench, which shows the depth in quality that is now being built.
