Tim Sherwood has shared that he would have signed Callum Hudson-Odoi from Chelsea for Tottenham Hotspur ’18 months ago’, but now he has replaced Brennan Johnson at Nottingham Forest.
It was a busy transfer deadline day for Tottenham and Nottingham Forest, with the duo doing a heap of business, including changes to their wide areas.
With Tottenham signing Brennan Johnson in a £48 million deal (Sky Sports), it pushed Steve Cooper’s side to bring in Callum Hudson-Odoi in a £5 million deal from Chelsea (The Athletic).
But Sherwood claims, if you had offered him the chance to sign either player 18 months ago, then he would have taken Forest’s new boy, as he told Premier League Productions (05/09/23 at 5:50 pm).
Whilst Johnson would have been in the Championship at the time, these past few years haven’t been easy for Hudson-Odoi, who was earning minutes for England as a teenager, but has struggled in recent times, including at Bayer Leverkusen last season.
That’s why Chelsea have decided to part ways with the 22-year-old this summer, who is now filling the shoes of Johnson at Forest.

Hudson-Odoi over Brennan Johnson
“Hudson-Odoi in and Brennan Johnson out,” said Sherwood. “18 months ago, if you asked me what player I would have liked at Tottenham, I know Brennan Johnson has gone there, but I would have said Hudson-Odoi.
“I think it’s an amazing swap that will be. I think the boy will flourish. I think they have signed some fantastic players. Elanga has come in. I think it’s brilliant business. They have got a top manager in Cooper, so they are safe.”

Who will have the better season? Hudson-Odoi or Johnson?
Big pressure on both players at their new clubs, with the likelihood that Hudson-Odoi earns more minutes than the Wales international – it has been claimed that it’s going to take Johnson ‘ten games’ to break into Ange Postecoglou’s first team.
But it’s going to be interesting to see how the duo get on because, after four Premier League games, both Forest and Spurs have made positive starts to the new season.
You would expect Tottenham to score more goals because Postecoglou has transformed the London side, but don’t be surprised if Forest are one of the dark horses of the new season.
