Leeds United target Adam Forshaw was tipped for an England call 18 months ago.

Leeds United are close to tying up a deal for Middlesbrough midfielder Adam Forshaw, the Yorkshire Evening Post report.

For just £2 million, Forshaw could be one of the best signings this transfer window at Championship level, and has been under utilised by Middlesbrough this season.

Just 18 months ago the midfielder was being tipped for an England call up.

The Mail speculated in October 2016 that Gareth Southgate was casting his eye over Forshaw, having been impressed with the former Everton trainee’s form.

Boro boss at the time backed Forshaw heavily when quizzed if Forshaw had the quality to play for the Three Lions.

He said: “Maybe for some people it is a surprise how good Adam is, but not for me.

“If Gareth called him up he wouldn’t be making a mistake, for sure, because he is taking an amazing player, professional and person.

“Now it is easy to say how good a player he is but, when he wasn’t playing, he was the first one who wanted to improve, the first one to come to my office to show me that he was always ready to play in every single position.

“So for me it is not a surprise if he goes to the national team.”

Boro technical director at the time Victor Orta is now at Leeds, and is under pressure to deliver a top player this transfer window.

Forshaw could be just what he needs, and could make a major impact for the Whites as they look to push for promotion to the Premier League.

Leeds sit just outside the play-offs in seventh place, and do not want to fall short after missing out agonisingly last season.
