Julian Draxler saw his effort well saved by Iker Casillas – but he only blamed himself for the ‘mistake’
Schalke 04 took on Real Madrid in the Veltins Arena last night – and though the Gelsenkirchen stadium is used to hosting championship boxing bouts – this was a frankly ridiculous pummelling.
The three man strike force of Karim Benzema, Gareth Bale and Cristiano Ronaldo, now dubbed BBC by the Spanish media, tore Schalke apart in a 6-1 victory.
Schalke now look seemingly out of the tie – but for times they really were on par with Real – especially going forward.
But they found Iker Casillas in fine form.
The Spanish international captain has been dropped recently for Diego Lopez in La Liga – but he was his sensational best against the Bundesliga side yesterday.
One save that came in for particular praise was when faced by Julian Draxler.
Draxler is a £37 million transfer target for Arsenal – and has been for around 18 months now.
This summer they are expected to make a move for the player – but he could not put the ball past Casillas from just a yard out…
But Draxler was not full of praise for Casillas when asked about the save – he classed it as a miss.
He said an amateur would have done different…
“The save by Casillas? Any amateur could have finished it on any pitch. The mistake was mine.”
