Speaking on Newcastle United’s YouTube channel, Amanda Staveley has disclosed what she was speaking to Eddie Howe about this weekend during the Brighton match.
Howe is the new manager of Newcastle United and while he was only unveiled on Monday, the writing was on the wall over the weekend.
Indeed, the former Bournemouth gaffer was spotted with Staveley at the Amex and the Newcastle shareholder has divulged what they were speaking about during the game.
What’s been said?
Staveley says that she was speaking to Howe about relegation during the Magpies’ game against the Seagulls.
“We had to have someone leading the club who was not frightened about relegation. I remember me and Eddie speaking about this at the weekend during the Brighton match. He’s going back into a position he’s been in before, it’s not a position we’ve sat in, but as an investment group, it would have been an easy decision to not buy the club just yet, wait until after Christmas and after the January window, see where the club was in the league and then make the acquisition, that would have been the safest bet,” Staveley said.

Realist
Say what you will about Staveley, but she seems to be a realist.
Anyone fronting a multi-billionaire group’s takeover of a Premier League club would have every right to be aiming for the stars straight away, but Staveley recognises the immediate threat of relegation.
Howe may not be the biggest name in football, but he knows how to navigate a relegation battle, and if the worst does happen, he knows how to get a club out of the Championship as well.
