Newcastle United have already been extremely active in the transfer window and are still looking for more signings.
Lucas Leiva was brought to England by Rafa Benitez during his time at Liverpool
Liverpool star Lucas Leiva has been at at the club for nine years, after Rafa Benitez brought him to England from Brazilian club Gremio in 2007.
Would Leiva consider a reunion with his former manager at Newcastle United if Benitez made an attempt to bring him to the North East?
The Brazilian is exactly what the Magpies need in the middle of the park. He is aggressive and tenacious in the tackle and has a wealth of experience at the highest level.
Lucas Leiva would be a fantastic addition to the Newcastle side
He is a natural leader, something the Tyneside club desperately lack, and his versatility allows him to play in midfield or, as he proved during Liverpool’s defensive crisis last term, in a central defensive position.
The 29-year-old would bring an added level of steel and grit to what is a fairly fragile Newcastle midfield. His addition to Benitez’s staring XI would also greatly improve their ball retention, with Leiva considered as one of the best passers in the game.
With it looking ever more likely that Moussa Sissoko will leave St James’ Park this summer, it is vital that Benitez moves to increase his options in the midfield department.
Lucas Leiva would add steel to Newcastle’s fragile midfield
Leiva’s contract at Anfield expires next summer, so any kind of respectable offer would have to be at least considered by the Liverpool hierarchy.
If Newcastle could pull off a signing of this magnitude it would be a clear statement of intent to the rest of the league, and one that would put them in a far greater position to achieve promotion back to the Premier League.
Leiva made just 21 Premier League starts for Liverpool last term and his first-team opportunities would surely increase at St James’ Park.
Would Newcastle manager Rafael Benitez consider a move for Lucas Leiva?
