Memphis Depay struggled for Manchester United last season, but he would be the ideal signing for Tottenham Hotspur.
Memphis Depay struggled under the management of Louis van Gaal
Memphis Depay arrived at Old Trafford last summer with the tag of one of Europe’s most exciting young talents.
Manchester United paid a reported £25 million for the then 21-year-old’s services, and there was a buzz of excitement around the club with many people predicting a bright future for the young Dutchman.
However, after an impressive start to the season his performances tailed off and his confidence began to diminish after a string of poor displays. He was part of a team with rigid structure under Louis van Gaal, where attacking players were expected to track back and be part of a defensive unit when the opposition were in possession. There is a feeling that being part of such a rigid structure took away some of Depay’s magic and spontaneous brilliance.
Memphis Depay still has a lot to prove in England
With Jose Mourinho now in the United hot-seat, more pragmatism is expected at Old Trafford, with the Portuguese notorious for expecting his wingers to track back and defend.
Will Depay find himself in a similar situation to last season?
Tottenham Hotspur are a team who desperately need an accomplished winger to provide them extra width and more variation in their play. Depay would be the ideal signing, although some people would look upon it as a risk after his struggles in the Premier League last season.
At just 22, Depay is still a work in progress, but he showed glimpses of what he is capable of last season. He is incredibly quick and is highly accomplished at beating defenders before cutting back and whipping in a dangerous delivery.
His quality is unquestionable, and his 24 caps for Holland despite his tender years prove how highly he is thought of within the game.
Deeply is a regular for the Netherlands
Harry Kane would thrive having someone like Depay in the Spurs side. Their attacking play seems to be focused down the middle on a far too regular basis, and they can become quite predictable to play against. Depay would give them something that little bit different with his pace and direct style. He is also not afraid to shoot from distance and could help ease the goal burden on Kane and Christian Eriksen.
If a move were to come to fruition, it would be one that would seemingly suit both clubs and the player involved, and maybe then Depay could finally start to live up to his billing as one of the world’s best young players.
Deeply would be a perfect signing for Spurs, albeit one not without risk
