Leicester will need to add strength in depth to their squad as they prepare to defend their Premier League crown.
Newcastle’s Jonjo Shelvey failed to establish himself last season
Who would have thought this time last year that Leicester City would be current Premier League champions and Newcastle United would be preparing for a season in the Championship?
Both clubs now face entirely different challenges and expectations as they faced last season, and while the Magpies have already brought in notable re-inforcements, the Foxes are yet to make a splash in the transfer window.
The East Midlands outfit will be in a financially strong position, with the increased revenue that comes from Champions League football, and their fans will be hoping they use those funds to invest in the squad.
Shelvey could provide competition for Danny Drinkwater
A good place to start would be a move for Newcastle midfielder Jonjo Shelvey. The 24-year-old failed to establish himself as a first team regular on Tyneside after the arrival of Rafa Benitez in March.
If Shelvey were to make a move to Leicester, it would be beneficial for all parties concerned. He would still command a substantial transfer fee, so Rafa’s transfer kitty would be further enhanced. He would also have the opportunity to join the champions, and re-astblish himself as a Premier League star.
Shelley’s talent is unquestionable, and he would improve Leicester’s midfield options
The move would give Shelvey’s career the kick-start it seems to need, and he would represent the perfect competition for Danny Drinkwater in the middle of the park. There is no better way to guard against complacency than the arrival of new players at a football club, and the acquisition of Shelvey would have the potential to push Drinkwater to an even higher level.
The former Liverpool and Swansea City man would also bring something to Leicester’s midfield that they currently lack, with his fantastic range of passing, and shooting from distance.
In his time at Leicester, Ranieri has proven that he doesn’t necessarily go for ‘vogue’ name signings, and bringing in Shelvey from the Championship would see this trend continue.
Would Ranieri consider a move for Shelvey?
