Middlesbrough are in the midst of a defensive injury crisis as the new Premier League season draws nearer, and Aitor Karanka must ensure that he bolsters his options in time for the big kick-off on August 13.
The Boro boss confirmed his need for reinforcements after his side’s 3-1 friendly victory against Aston Villa on Saturday, with many of his key defenders injured, as reported by the Northern Echo.
“The better players we have, the more chance we have to stay in the Premier League,” he said. “We need more signings because we don’t have central defenders. With the injuries we have we need to improve.”

A sensible options for the Teessiders would be Leicester’s Ritchie De Laet. Although he is a right-back by trade, he is fully proficient at playing the centre-back role and would be a fantastic addition to the Boro squad.
He spent six months on loan at the Riverside last term, and performed admirably when called upon, making 10 Championship appearances during the North East club’s promotion charge.

Having worked with the Belgian before, Karanka would know exactly what he is capable of, and should seriously consider adding him to his squad before the start of the new campaign.
The 27-year-old has spent his entire career in English football and is highly experienced at Premier League level.
Middlesbrough begin their Premier League campaign with a home fixture against Stoke City on August 13.
