German newspaper Sport Bild is reporting that Julian Draxler has asked to leave Wolfsburg, with Arsenal leading the race for his signature.
The 22-year-old Germany international is quoted by Bild as saying: “Before you go public like that, you really should speak with me first. The situation with me is that I made it clear to Dieter Hecking after we were knocked out of Euro 2016 in the semi-final that I would like to leave Wolfsburg. The coach has known about this for three weeks.”
Draxler has spoken of his desire to leave Wolfsburg
The news of Draxler’s comments will surely alert the Gunners who are long time admirers of the former Schalke man.
BETVICTOR price Arsenal as 13/8 favourites in the race to sign Draxler, with Manchester United second on the list at 4/1.
He can play anywhere along the front line and has blistering pace, which would be an asset to any top European side, and he impressed for his country at the European Championships scoring once and providing an assist.
The speedy winger only moved to Wolfsburg last summer from Schalke, but judging by his comments he wants to move on to another club.
Julian Draxler celebrates after scoring for Germany
Bild claim that after Draxler turned down Juventus last summer, he was given assurances from Wolfsburg that he would be allowed to leave should a big club come in for him, and he feels that the German side are a springboard to his career:
“When I joined, I was assured – verbally – that I could leave the club whenever the opportunity arose,” he said. “Both Hecking and sporting director Klaus Allofs said this. It was clear that Wolfsburg had good prospects, but also that they were a springboard for me. It was always clear to everybody that I would like to join a top club in Europe, if I were to get the chance.”
Whether Arsenal decide to make a formal approach for Draxler remains to be seen, but one thing for sure is that he would improve the Gunners side immeasurably.
