Despite bringing in Ashley Williams, it was surprising that Everton manager Ronald Foeman did not make further moves to strengthen his defensive options before the close of the transfer window.

The Toffees do have 19-year-old Mason Holgate, but to rely on someone so young and inexperienced, in a season where much will be expected of Koeman’s side, would be at best hopeful and at worse negligent.
Although the transfer window is closed, clubs can still sign free agents between now and January, until the next window opens.

The 29-year-old Uruguayan international defender has not played since he was ruled out in February with an achilles injury, but he is now on the road to recovery, with interest from Chelsea being reported by Italian media outlet Calcio Mercato.
The former Juve man is vastly experienced and is an accomplished ball-playing centre-back, although he is is renowned for his tenacious, typically South American style.
He is a proven winner, and would bring a certain mentality to the Merseyside outfit, should they consider a move for him.
Although there would be risk involved in the sense that he is coming back from a long-term injury, the fact that there is no transfer fee involved will reduce that risk substantially, and should a move come to fruition, Everton would be in a far stronger position to tackle the physically demanding season ahead.
