The Foxes star has been instrumental in their rise to the top of the table this season.

The Daily Mail understand that Leicester City are planning to offer Riyad Mahrez a bumper new contract, in the region of £80,000 per week, to keep the circling vultures at bay.

With money from the new TV deal due to come in next season, and increased revenue from their impending Champions League participation, they feel as though they now have the financial muscle to compete with the big clubs, and hold on to one of their key assets.

It has been a remarkable rise from both Leicester and Mahrez this season, with the former Le Havre man scoring 17 and assisting 11 in 36 games.

He scored only four goals in the whole of last season, and his improvement must be seen by the Leicester board as a key contributing factor to their success.

Jamie Vardy has already been given a new and improved contract, and Mahrez will surely be offered the same kind of deal.

The question is, will it be enough to spurn the advances of the European elite?

Leicester fans will be hoping he follows his team-mate – Vardy, in committing his long-term future to the club.

The East-Midlander’s focus must be on the present however, as their chase for the title continues.

They carried on their good form with a 1-0 over Southampton, and in doing so, earned a crucial three points.
