Spanish youngster Javier Manquillo joined Sunderland on a season-long loan at the end of last month and he has explained what is motivating him to succeed on Wearside, when speaking to the Mirror.

The 22-year-old enjoyed a consistent loan spell with Ligue 1 outfit Marseille last term, and is determined to prove that Liverpool made the wrong decision in returning him back to Atletico Madrid last summer, halfway through a two-year loan spell:

“I played 42 games last season at the highest level. That has given me a lot of experience I unfortunately did not get at Liverpool. Of course I am a more mature player than I was there. I have nothing to prove to Liverpool. It was a positive experience. I have everything to prove to Sunderland not Liverpool. That is the team I want to impress.”

Manquillo was one of eight summer signings made by Black Cats boss David Moyes, and the former Liverpool full-back described to the Mirror how it was Moyes who convinced him to make the move to the Stadium of Light:

“There were no nerves at coming back to England. The major difference was the manager convinced me to come. He made me feel wanted. He was a key figure in me coming back. I have no fear whatsoever. I am looking forward to coming back here to the Premier League with a project I identify with.”

Manquillo will be hoping that Moyes gives him the opportunity to play as regularly as he did in France last-term, and if he can play on a consistent basis, there is no reason why he cannot improve and raise his game to a an even higher level.

Sunderland resume their Premier League campaign with a home match against Moyes’ former club Everton next week on Monday Night Football.
