Leeds United still need to strengthen in certain areas ahead of the Championship season.
With the new Championship season just a couple of days away, Leeds United are still in urgent need of strengthening their squad.
The Elland Road club have only three senior central defenders in their squad, and one of those – Liam Cooper – has been absent for the whole of pre-season through injury.
A smart addition for manager Garry Monk to make would be West Ham United’s Canadian centre-back Doneil Henry.
Doneil Henry spent two separate loan spells at Blackburn Rovers last year
The 23-year-old is highly thought of at West Ham, but will struggle for first-team football with James Collins, Angelo Ogbonna and Winston Reid ahead of him in the pecking order.
Henry has made only one appearance for the Hammers since his move to the club in January 2015 so would benefit greatly from a loan spell somewhere, and Leeds would be the perfect destination.
Monk has always tried to implement a passing philosophy into his tactical play – a style very similar to that of Hammers boss Slaven Bilic.
West Ham’s Doneil Henry
The former Toronto FC player has undoubted ability, highlighted by the 19 international caps he already has to his name. He is physically imposing and extremely quick, which make him ideally suited to the Championship.
He did spend two separate month-long spells in England’s second tier with Blackburn Rovers, making four appearances for Lancashire club.
For someone approaching his mid-twenties, his lack of regular first-team football could have a seriously detrimental effect on the rest of his career.
It will be vital for him and West Ham that he is given the opportunity to play this term, and where better to continue his football education than at Leeds United under Monk?
