Ashley Williams thinks Newcastle United striker Callum Wilson will be questioning his game time with England at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.
Gareth Southgate opted against bringing on the Newcastle star during England’s goalless draw against the USA on Friday, despite the team needing a goal and attacking bite.
This despite Wilson coming off the bench and making an impact, including supplying an assist, as the Three Lions put six past Iran for their opening Group B encounter.
The tactics and use of substitutions by Southgate were heavily questioned and former Wales international Williams suggested that Wilson will be left baffled, as he told Match of the Day.
“I am pretty sure Callum Wilson is sitting there thinking ‘am I going to see any minutes at this World Cup?’,” said Williams.
“We know that Harry Kane is one of the best strikers in the world. But it wasn’t his best game and he did look fatigued. He did look tired.
“Maybe do something a little different to freshen it up because England were getting overrun (against the USA), especially in the midfield. They were just getting physically dominated. With the bench England have got, the introduction of fresh legs a little earlier might have been clever.”
WILSON TO START AGAINST WALES?
Barring the collapse of all collapses, England will be in the knockout stages of the World Cup. It’s just a case of first place or second.
Bearing that in mind, should Southgate now rest Harry Kane and start Wilson?
There are some calling for that to happen, including Alan Shearer, whilst Kane might not like it, Wilson will love that idea, that’s for sure.
