Daryl Janmaat’s versatility could prove vital to Newcastle United’s promotion hopes next season.
Daryl Janmaat was deployed as a right winger for Newcastle United in their 4-0 friendly victory against KSC Lokeren in Belgium on Saturday and he told the club’s official website how much he enjoyed the freedom that the attacking role brings.
“It was different but I like it,” he said. “I do it in my own way – I’m not a proper winger but I’m a good runner and I tried to make the best of it that I can.”
Janmaat proved he is more than capable of playing in a more advanced role
The 27-year-old demonstrated his attacking prowess for the first 45 minutes, and gave a glimpse of his potential ability by scoring the Magpies’ second goal. He did, however, insist that he expects to return to his more accustomed role of right-back in time for the start of the new season, telling nufc.co.uk.
“I like playing right-back – that’s my place – because I can come from behind to help out the attack,” he added. “But it’s nice to be able to help out in different positions, to show what I can do there, and I was happy to help the team out with a goal.”
Janmaat has proved to be a consistent performer for Newcastle
With such a long and physically demanding Championship campaign ahead for Rafa Benitez’s men, Janmaat displaying such aptitude in a more advanced role than he is used to will please the Newcastle coaching staff immensely, and provide them with yet another option in their quest to achieve promotion.
Janmaat has made 75 appearances for the North East club since his move to St James’ Park from Dutch side Feyenoord in 2014, and he has been one of Newcastle’s more consistent performers over that period.
