Everton midfielder Tom Cleverley could be the ideal acquisition for Sunderland.
Everton’s Tom Cleverley
Sunderland have shown over the past few years that they lack a certain amount of composure and technical craft in the central midfield area.
Despite the tenacity and work-rate of players such as Lee Cattermole and Jan Kirchhoff, they would benefit greatly from making a quality addition in that area before the transfer window closes.
An ideal signing for the Wearside outfit could be Everton’s Tom Cleverley, with Black Cats boss David Moyes a keen admirer of the 27-year-old after their time together at Manchester United during the 2013-14 season.
Everton’s Idrissa Gueye in action
With the addition of Idrissa Gueye to the Everton squad, Cleverley may find his first-team starting opportunities limited this season, and has managed only one substitute appearance so far this campaign.
During Moyes season in charge at Old Trafford, Cleverley made 18 Premier League starts, one more than he managed for Everton last term, and a move to the Stadium of Light could see the former Wigan Athletic man become an integral part of Sunderland’s side.
The 13-capped England international can play anywhere across the midfield and his versatility could prove to be very useful for Sunderland throughout the course of what will be an extremely physically demanding campaign.
Would Sunderland manager David Moyes consider a reunion with Tom Cleverley?
He is an accomplished passer of the football, comfortable in possession, and contributes equally to both the defensive and attacking sides of the game.
The 27-year-old’s contract does not expire until 2020 at Everton, so a substantial transfer fee will likely be required to prise him away from Goodison Park, but one that the Black Cats should be able to afford nevertheless.
